Origins of Gingham
It's not definitively known where Gingham originated from but this classic pattern has been found in Asia and Europe for centuries. The name may originate from Malay 'genggang'. It is also thought that the fabric now known as gingham may have been made at Guingamp, a town in Brittany, France, and that the fabric may be named after the town.
Characteristics of a Gingham print
When originally imported into Europe in the 17th century, gingham was a striped fabric, though now it is distinguished by its checkered pattern. From the mid-18th century, it started to be woven into checked or plaid patterns. Checked gingham became more common over time and is now that pattern we think of, when we hear Gingham.
Gingham or Grid Washi for bujo spreads and planners?
Both gingham and grid patterns layer well and we don't think you can go wrong with either choice! Gingham layers exceptionally well with floral washi and stickers. Washi tape is perfect for all journal paper types, but because the adhesive is light, it works especially well with thin paper (such as in the hobonici weeks planner below). Because the washi adhesive is light, you can reposition the tape without ripping the delicate pages.
